About CitiQro

From “City” and “Iqro” – Reading the City Through Data

CitiQro (City + Iqro/إقرأ) is a research initiative that aims to “read the city” by combining environmental sensing, artificial intelligence, and urban health science. The project focuses on Bandung as a tropical basin city with complex air quality dynamics and diverse mobility patterns.

What CitiQro explores

  • How hyperlocal air quality varies across streets, neighborhoods, and micro-climates.
  • How mobile sensing and AI can close monitoring gaps beyond fixed stations.
  • How individual mobility shapes personal exposure and health risk.
  • How Digital Twins can support health-aware urban planning and policy.

Key components of the project

  • Mobile sensor network on public and opportunistic urban fleets.
  • Spatio-temporal AI models for high-resolution air quality prediction.
  • Personal Environmental Health Index (PEHI) for individuals and groups.
  • Health-Driven Mobile Sensor Scheduling for smarter data collection.
Core Capabilities

What CitiQro Makes Possible

The CitiQro stack is designed as a modular, research-driven platform that can support hyperlocal environmental analytics, personalized exposure studies, and smart city health applications.

Hyperlocal Air Quality

Mobile Sensing + Multi-source Fusion

Integrates low-cost sensors on moving vehicles with fixed stations, satellite data, meteorology and traffic to build fine-grained air quality maps at 25–50 m resolution.

Spatio-Temporal AI

Graph & Sequence Models

Uses LSTM, GNN and DCRNN models to learn city-wide space–time patterns, forecast short-term air quality, and quantify uncertainty across the urban network.

Personal Health

Personalized Exposure & PEHI

Combines mobility traces, vulnerability profiles, and predicted air quality to compute a Personalized Environmental Health Index (PEHI) for individuals and population groups.

Digital Twin

Urban Environmental Twin

Maintains a live digital representation of Bandung’s environmental conditions, enabling interactive maps, scenario simulations, and policy exploration.

HD-MSS

Health-Driven Sensor Scheduling

Optimizes mobile sensor routes by prioritizing high-risk zones, vulnerable communities, and regions with high prediction uncertainty to maximize health-relevant insight.

Open Collaboration

Research & City Partnerships

Designed to collaborate with universities, city agencies, communities, and startups to co-develop tools, datasets, and interventions for healthier urban environments.

Research Focus

CitiQro as a Doctoral Research Framework

CitiQro underpins an ongoing doctoral research agenda on personalized environmental health, focusing on Bandung as a living laboratory for mobile sensing, spatio-temporal AI, and Digital Twin–enabled decision support.

Key Questions

  • How can mobile sensing close spatial and temporal gaps in air quality monitoring?
  • How accurate can graph-based AI models become at 25–50 m resolution?
  • How should PEHI be defined to fairly represent individual vulnerability?
  • How can HD-MSS reduce model uncertainty while prioritizing health impact?

Planned Outcomes

  • Open research papers and benchmarks on hyperlocal air quality modelling.
  • Prototype PEHI calculator and exposure dashboard for selected communities.
  • Digital Twin Bandung demonstrator for air quality & health scenarios.
  • Guidelines for city agencies on integrating mobile sensing into policy.

CitiQro is currently in active development. If you are a researcher, city official, NGO, or community group working on air quality, climate resilience, or urban health, we would love to explore collaboration opportunities.
